What is SAVI all about?
SAVI – STOP Aylesbury Vale Incineration – is a group of local people formed in March 2009 to campaign against plans to site an EfW (Energy from Waste) incineration plant adjacent to a grade II listed building, Lower Greatmoor Farm, Edgcott. This is a beautiful agricultural greenfield site in the heart of the ancient Bernwode Forest. A minimum of one hundred 44 tonne lorries per day will access the plant to provide the waste to feed the continually burning incinerator. Problems with increased noise, litter trail, light & traffic pollution will be dwarfed by the massive size of the incinerator building – 51m high with a chimney c 96m – which would turn this rural haven into an industrial wasteland. Whilst no planning application has yet been made Waste Recycling Group are expected to enter a planning application. Other county areas have already campaigned to stop incinerators being placed in their locality. We believe we must act now to stop this monstrosity and protect our local heritage.
But Electricity from Waste sounds like a good idea doesn’t it?
At first glance the concept of creating electricity from waste might sound attractive but examination of the evidence shows the case against incineration is damning. Incineration; releases greenhouse gases, creates toxic emissions and hazardous ash, exaggerates future waste quantities instead of increasing volumes of recycling & composting, poses significant health risks, is often forced through in the face of strong public opposition. The alternatives to incineration are cheaper, more flexible and better for the environment.
